The Divisional Secretariat Kataragama serves the community by implementing government policies, development programs, and administrative services to improve the living standards of the people in the region.

Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya

Kataragama Kirivehera

Kataragama, which belonged to the ancient Magama Kingdom, is one of the most sacred and historically significant areas in Sri Lanka. The region is famous for its religious and cultural heritage, especially the sacred Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya and the ancient Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya. Kataragama is considered a multi-religious sacred city visited by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and other devotees. The sacred area is associated with the deity Kataragama, also known as Murugan or Skanda.

Kataragama Divisional Secretariat is located in the Moneragala District in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka. The total land area is approximately 55,200 hectares, of which around 71.5% is reserved forest land while 28.5% is used for human settlements, agriculture, and infrastructure development.

The terrain of Kataragama is mostly flat and lies approximately 150 feet above sea level. The main water source of the area is the Menik River, which plays an important role in agriculture and daily life.

Kataragama belongs to the dry zone of Sri Lanka and experiences warm weather throughout the year. The average temperature ranges between 25°C and 28°C while annual rainfall ranges between 1000 mm and 1500 mm.

Cultural Activities

Annual Esala Perahera of Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya

Kataragama is a culturally diverse region where Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, and other communities live together. The annual Esala Festival of the Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya is one of the most famous cultural events in Sri Lanka and attracts thousands of devotees and tourists every year.
